The 2024 School of Engineering Dean’s Award for Excellence recipient is Dr. Alison Polasik.
Polasik is an associate professor of engineering and teaches key sophomore and junior courses in materials, statics, mechanics and advanced thermodynamics. She has also developed a senior elective course on failure and corrosion as well as our preparatory course for the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.
Polasik is noted for her dedication, persistence, adaptability and resilience with respect to teaching. She is also a strong proponent of project-based learning. Because many of the courses she teaches are advanced, she works to make the complicated concepts in these courses easier to understand, often through innovative hands-on projects and demonstrations. All of her courses also feature projects that connect course concepts to practical, real world applications.
Polasik received her bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Arizona State University in 2002, followed by her MS and PhD degrees in materials science and engineering from Ohio State University in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Her doctoral research was funded by the U.S. Air Force and the prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.
