From Dr. Michael B. Wells, dean of the College of Arts & Sciences:
Dr. Sherry Truffin is the recipient of the 2022 Dean’s Award for Excellence in the College of Arts & Sciences at Campbell University for her outstanding service.
Dr. Truffin, a tenured Professor of English, earned a Ph.D. in English from Loyola University Chicago. She joined the College of Arts & Sciences faculty in 2011.
Dr. Truffin excels in service to her department, college, and university. In the English Department she is a key player in the development of curriculum and assessment. Dr. Truffin was recently appointed to the new College of Arts & Sciences Department Chair level position that encompasses two roles: Chair of the General College Curriculum Committee and Director of the Honors Program. Dr. Truffin has been instrumental in revamping the Honors Program at Campbell University to include competitive admission, new cohesive curriculum, study abroad requirement and residential learning community.
Under her leadership, retention and persistence in the program have increased. In a similar fashion, Dr. Truffin’s work as Chair of the General College Curriculum Committee has strengthened this underpinning of our liberal arts education. The competencies, outcomes, and assessment of the General College Curriculum have been improved and streamlined.
In addition to her service on Campbell University’s main campus, Dr. Truffin was one of the first to volunteer to teach English courses in Campbell’s program at Sampson County Correctional Institution. Dr. Truffin’s remarks about her experience in the program illustrate her view that service as an instructor is about much more than the course syllabus, “I think that a liberal arts education is designed to not only develop your skills, but also develop your values, empathy, self sacrifice and those other intangibles that are important in higher education, specifically Christian higher education.”
Dr. Sherry Truffin is a true servant leader and an outstanding example of faculty excellence in the College of Arts & Sciences. I am delighted to present Dr. Truffin the 2022 Dean’s Award for Excellence.
