Dr. Ryan Newson is the recipient of the 2024 Dean’s Award for Excellence in the College of Arts & Sciences at Campbell University for his outstanding contributions in the areas of service and scholarship.
Newson, associate professor of Christian Studies, earned a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics and Philosophical Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. He joined the College of Arts & Sciences faculty in 2017.
Newson is an active servant-leader in his department, across the university and community. Of great significance is Newson’s service as the academic program coordinator and academic advisor of the Biomedical Humanities program. Since its launch in 2018 , the Biomedical Humanities program has flourished.
Newson serves on the Honors Program Committee, is the faculty advisor for the Bioethics Student group, and helped write assessment for the university’s WE Write! writing enhancement program. In the community, Newson is an active member of his church and its many outreach activities including a reentry program in Durham for the formerly incarcerated.
Newson’s scholarship since arriving at Campbell is impressive, resulting in numerous publications of high impact. He is the author of multiple books that are a blend of theology, ethics, society, history and politics. Most recently, Newson published The End of Civility with Baylor University Press in 2023, a study of the ethics of civility that includes 90 pages of endnotes, citations and documentation, demonstrating the quality and depth of his research. In addition to the books, Newson has authored many peer reviewed journal articles, presented a dozen papers at conferences, book reviews and participated in panel discussions.
Dr. Ryan Newson has made significant contributions in service and scholarship at Campbell University. He is an outstanding example of faculty excellence in the College of Arts & Sciences. I am delighted to present him with the 2024 Dean’s Award for Excellence.
