Candidates who hold a bachelor's degree but are not licensed to teach in the public schools must meet the requirements for initial licensure before being recommended for graduate licensure. (See also the sections on the Initial Plus Master’s licensure programs)
Before being recommended for licensure for teaching at the “Master’s”/advanced level, candidates must hold or be eligible for initial licensure in an appropriate teaching area. As of September 1, 2000 all candidates in curriculum and instruction (the teaching areas) must satisfactorily demonstrate the Master’s Advanced competencies adopted by the North Carolina State Board of Education. Candidates in the school-counseling program must follow the guidelines on pages 43-46 of this catalog. Candidates in the school administration program must consult with the area coordinator for their program regarding the specific requirements.
First time applicants for licensure in North Carolina must complete their part of the initial licensure form, provide official undergraduate transcripts, Praxis II (subject area) scores, and a personal check, money order, or certified check in the amount of $55.00* made out to Licensure Section Department of Public Instruction. All these items should be sent or taken to the Office of the Dean for completion of the application and formal recommendation for licensure.
Those who are already licensed by the State of North Carolina must fill out the form for a change in licensure; it is available in the Office of the Dean. The completed form, Praxis II scores if needed, and a personal check, money order, or certified check in the amount of $55.00* made out to Licensure Section Department of Public Instruction must then be taken or sent to the Office of the Dean for completion of the application and formal recommendation for the change in licensure.
All licensed persons desiring licensure in an area in which they are not licensed must take the subject area test(s) of the Praxis II examinations in that subject area, according to the regulations of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). Questions may be directed to the Dean or to the Licensure Division of NCDPI.
Please note that North Carolina is in a period of transition relative to the Praxis examination requirements. Changes in the regulations have occurred frequently. Before signing up for one or more of the Praxis II examinations, students should consult with their advisors about current requirements, obtain a copy of the pertinent Test at a Glance (TAAG) booklet(s), and a set of instructions for registering for the test(s).
This fee is assessed by the State Board of Education and is subject to change. The student will be responsible for paying the fee assessed at the time application for licensure is made.
Licensure forms may be found on the "Forms" link for the School of Education. These forms must be sent to Charity Tart at the following address: School of Education, PO Box 369, Buies Creek, NC 27506.
