BUIES CREEK -- During a meeting with the Campbell University Facilities Management staff on Monday, Feb. 17, Vice President for Business and Treasurer Jim Roberts thanked them for their contributions to the university -- including working during the recent snowy and icy conditions -- and made a surprise announcement: Scot Phillips has been promoted to director of facilities and Randall Johnson to associate director of facilities.
“I am proud to say that I hired both of these fellows,” Roberts said before the facilities staff. “They have been around for a good while, and they have learned as we have grown and we have a lot of good things going on.
“We’ve got such a wonderful place, and it shows that way because of each one of you,” Roberts added. “Thank you for what you do for Campbell University. You do great things.”
As director, Phillips will oversee all of Facilities Management, which is comprised of 12 distinct areas, including audio visual and telecommunications, the mail room, grounds, housekeeping and central stores.
“It’s a big responsibility, and it’s an honor to me,” said Phillips, who was previously an assistant director. “This is the greatest group, and I’m proud to be a part of it. We’re going to accomplish a lot of great things together.”
Phillips joined Campbell in 2005, first working in the stock room. He earned a certificate in operations management from Central Carolina Community College in 2006 and completed his building standards inspector level 1 requirements from Fayetteville Technical Community College in 2007. Two years later, he graduated from APPA’s Institute for Facilities Management and earned an associate’s degree in business operations management from Central Carolina. He went on to receive a bachelor’s in business management from Liberty University in 2011, and is currently working on his Master of Arts in Management and Leadership at Liberty.
“My advice to Jim was to do exactly what he has done: name Scot director,” said Johnson, who joined Campbell in 2002. “Scot came here, and he has done a lot of things to improve himself, and he has a lot to be proud of. This decision, this transition, I support 100 percent.”
In his new position as associate director of facilities, Johnson will be the defined second person in charge of Facilities Management. He’ll also continue to be responsible for the mechanical side of things, including HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electrical. He previously had been an assistant director.
“I tell everybody every day . . . that we have got one fine group of people in this department,” Johnson said. “I mean that with all my heart.”
In addition to the personnel moves, Roberts announced during Monday’s meeting that Campbell will host NCAPPA’s 2014 annual conference, “Getting Over the Hump,” March 5-7. NCAPPA is the North Carolina Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers.
“We’ve got great things to show at Campbell, and I want to show them off,” Roberts said. “I’ve been at five different institutions, and I am here to tell you that this is the best of the five I’ve been at.”
